The Department of Social Work at Yalova University, in collaboration with the Yalova Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services, the Yalova Paşakent Nursing Home, and Sugörenspor, participated in an intergenerational gathering held in Sugören Village as part of the “Swearing-Free Zone” Youth Project. The Sugören Village Council and the village community also contributed to the event.
Held on September 10, 2026, the event brought together residents of the Paşakent Nursing Home, young people, and the residents of Sugören Village. The gathering, which was also attended by undergraduate and graduate students from Yalova University’s Department of Social Work, provided an opportunity for different generations to spend time together, communicate with one another, and engage in social interaction.
As part of the event, our Department Chair, Prof. Dr. Harun Ceylan, delivered a speech on family, social solidarity, and intergenerational solidarity. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of the family for both the individual and society within the framework of the 2025 Year of the Family, highlighting the need to strengthen intergenerational bonds within the family, support social solidarity, and underscore the value that bringing young people and older adults together holds for social life.
Later in the program, young people, nursing home residents, and villagers spent time together, sharing a sense of community. Homemade treats prepared by the residents of Sugören Village were served to the nursing home residents and guests. The event, which also received support from the Sugören Village Council, turned into a warm and heartfelt gathering that brought together different generations.
Centered on intergenerational solidarity, the event served as a meaningful gathering aimed at supporting the participation of older adults in social life, raising young people’s awareness about aging, and strengthening social bonds between generations. The event also contributed to fostering public engagement with key areas of social work—such as active aging, social participation, and intergenerational solidarity.
The Department of Social Work at Yalova University will continue to bring together different segments of society and participate in social contribution initiatives that strengthen collaboration with external stakeholders.
